Abstract

The Extended Black Sea Area and the Three Seas Initiative have come to represent key geopolitical concepts particularly over the past decade. At the same time, the use of history for contemporary political purposes has increased, especially following the Russian invasion of the Crimean Peninsula (2014). The present paper surveys the potential connections between the aforementioned concepts and historical events used to legitimize present-day political actions. This survey also seeks to examine the relationship between crisis and a return to history (to the “glory days of old”), during the first two decades of the 21st century.
