Abstract

This paper provides an overview, analysis, and comparison of physical
education curricula and teaching programmes in some European countries. The comparison relates to the main goals defined in the compulsory physical education programmes in elementary and secondary schools and on the frequency of PE classes in the weekly timetable. The conclusion of the review of the situation in the curricula of some European countries is that the main focus is on developing motor skills, on the promotion of health through physical activity, and everyday exercise as a paradigm of healthy living. There is an obvious large difference among countries in the frequency of regular PE lessons in the weekly timetable among countries.
