Abstract

In the Republic of Croatia, textbooks became compulsory for the subject of Art in higher grades of elementary school (from the 5th to the 8th grade) for the first time in the school year 2006/07.The appearance and use of art textbooks promotes the goals of the national curriculum and encourages the development of students
Õ achievements and competences. In other words, it affects the realisation of the subject curriculum, the organisation of learning, the roles of students and teachers, and the overall school-work structure. In spite of the usual, traditional approach to the use of textbooks in art classes, it is expected that the introduction and use of textbooks in the teaching of this subject at the beginning of the 21st century will contribute to the progress of the educational process from the perspective of modern, psychological and didactic understandings, and to the realisation of various teaching methods, forms and strategies known under the common name of open class.
