Abstract

A survey was conducted to identify the ranking of job motivation factors of English teachers according to the degree of importance of, and the degree of satisfaction with, their everyday work. This was done by using the Questionnaire on the job motivation of EFL teachers on a sample of 133 EFL teachers employed in elementary
schools throughout Croatia. Most respondents were female (N = 122), with university degrees (N = 72). The age range was between 24 and 61, and according to years of service they ranged from those newly employed to those nearing retirement.
The results show that the respondents considered as most important the following factors: the opportunity to apply their own knowledge and capabilities, autonomy and responsibility in their work, and a secure and stable future. Teachers were the least satisfied in relation to the following factors: participation in management and decisionmaking, the image of the job, and their salary.
