Abstract
In spite of differences between different states, through an analysis of the (rarely) published works on education inspection, this paper considers its basic tasks (evaluation, counselling, monitoring, and developing databases, “arbitration” and reporting), inspection procedures, and human resources. Nearly all European states have a wellstructured and excellently set up education inspection (partially dispersed or decentralised, but always highly regarded in professional terms) which is considered as important support in implementing educational policies. Generally speaking, evaluation (of the educational process and educational outcomes) is becoming a prevailing task of education inspection, whereas education inspectorates whose fundamental task is to control and impose repressive measures do not have a brilliant future in the European
context.
