Dry matter and milk protein with regard to breeds and feeding of cows

Abstract
The aim of this work was to observe the situation and the influence of feeding on milk quality of our dairy cows in the region of Lika. For this purpose solids-not-fat and protein content of the milk from dairy cows of 7 individual milk producers were analysed. The feeding of the cows had a direct influence on milk yield. The milk yield of selected cow breeds was lower than genetically expected. In our conditions, the average milk yield of Friesian cows was higher compared to Brown and Simenthal cows. The highest solids-not-fat and protein content of the milk was obtained from Brown cows, while higher milk fat content was obtained from Friesian and Brown cows. The lowest milk yield was obtained from cows fed with higher hay content. By feeding cows using enriched forages generally the milk yield and milk quality increased. Milk obtained from cows with higher milk yield contained lower milk fat, protein, and dry matter percentage, which increased by, enriched feeding. These leads to conclusion that lower milk yield was due to poor nutritional value and unbalanced forages. No direct correlation between milk fat, and protein with regard to feeding composition was found as each of these parameters has its specific way of formation. The average solids-not-fat content was 8.72-8.93 %, proteins 3.38-3.61 % and milk fat 4.02-4.53 %. During the investigations the average milk yield was 13.2-21.4 % L milk/day. No significant difference in the milk volume and/or milk composition was found between morning and evening milking procedure, except in cases when the period between two milking procedures was shortened. Solids-not-fat and protein percentage was almoust identical in milk samples obtained from morning and evening milking. The only exception was found in Brown cows from the farm No. 4 where feeding of the cows included 6.5 kg hay, 15 kg silage and 7 kg balanced forages. In this case milk from the evening milking contained more solids-not-fat and protein.
