Abstract
Selected family farms dealing with cattle production (milk production and beef fattening) differ significantly by their production capacities and production technologies. Among the examined farms, differences are noticeable in revenues and costs of production per unit of capacity. Evaluation of business efficiency of examined farms is based on level of capacity utilization, cost price of milk and fattened beef, as well as business indicators (economy and profitability coefficients). The milk cost prices within examined farms range from 1.62 to 2.09 kn per I, and those of fattened beef range from 11.42 to 17.35 kn per kg of live animal. Selling prices do not differ significantly, but the stated product cost prices have on influence on significant differences in economic efficiency of examined farms. According to situation on domestic market, only farms with milk production over 3,500 I per head can obtain efficient business results under the unfavourable parities of inputs and output prices in cattle production. Farms that have no developed their own forage production, technology even in better economic conditions don't posses profitable, which is the main reason of decreasing or leaving the cattle production of some part of family farms in Croatia.
