Abstract

Wondering about the identity of a work of art and taking into consideration its communication al value, we wish to determine the possibility of it being understood in the context of a hermeneutic phenomenon. Our deliberations are primarily focused on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s core thesis: »Being that could be understood is language.« This would mean that, when deliberating on the identity of a work of art, we must first consider the work’s own being which is telling us something and that, on the basis of what it is telling us, it belongs to the context of all that we have to understand. If each work of art is telling us something, then we had better learn the language of the works of art in order to be able to at least partly determine the iridentity. The precondition for deliberating on the so-called ‘dialogics’ of a work of art is a presentation of primarily anthropological foundations of art, i.e. play, symbol and festivity, guiding us to the essence of the issue of the hermeneutic identity of a work of art.
