Abstract

In this article we discussed the current operating state of railway infrastructure within the European Union and Japan, especially from the aspect of the traffic safety and train composition control. As a base inspiration for this seminar information about the lack of rail interoperability within the European Union and the fact that some trains have on their locomotives up to 25 different sensors for signaling (Thalys) was used. The current state of the European train control system (ETCS) and the corresponding levels was described in detail. We also addressed the topic about the usage of GNSS and the odometer in order to improve navigation and reduce operation costs to the railways themselves. The Swedish bearing factory (SKF) and its importance to the improvement on quality of railways and their general contribution to the railways around the world was briefly described. Detailed descriptions and possibilities of the latest generation SKF Axletronic Odometers and of its implementation on existing and new trains will be shown in detail. At the end the Integrail system was explained as a new standard in the world of rail transport, its establishment, the benefits and its purpose.
