Abstract

The competitiveness of Croatian and
Slovenian tourism on the international market is
based on success in carrying out operational tasks
but also on the preparation and implementation of
strategic and other projects. These projects are of
key importance for tourism’s growth and
development, and for the business systems
operating in this branch of the economy.
Successful project management is of major
importance for the competitiveness of business
systems in the tourism sector, although not
enough attention has been given to this issue until
now. Neither has sufficient attention been paid to
the role played by employees in tourism projects
and to their motivation and sense of belonging to
an organisation.
For projects to be successful, a certain level of
training is required for persons dealing with
requesting, managing and participating in project
execution. The current tourism educational
system in Croatia and Slovenia does not develop
the necessary competences, knowledge and
experience in project management.
The authors of this paper propose amending the
existing tourism education system with elements of project management in line with the international
system for the development of project management
competences according to the International Project
Management Association (IPMA).
