Abstract

Learning and acquiring Croatian as a second and foreign language at a beginner’s level implies not only mastering many grammatical and lexical facts, but also attaining some level of intercultural competence. Unfortunately, teaching and developing intercultural competence (ICC) in the curriculum of Croatian as a FL and L2 has not been given enough importance. Modern approaches to language learning imply a more active role for both the teachers and the learners in developing ICC which is today, in a time of major globalization, one of the most important educational goals. In this article the general facts about ICC and the basic approaches are discussed. Also, different ways of incorporating existing frameworks and approaches in teaching ICC to Croatian as a foreign and second language are shown.
