ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF COMPETENCE AND INCOMPETENCE FOR MATHEMATICS
Vladimir Kadum
Abstract
The work deals with the problem of competence or incompetence for mathematics, emphasizing that psychology hasn’t still answered the question which special skills are required for successfully studying mathematics and learning of mathematical contents and how this special abilities evolve.
Opinions and attitudes of certain mathematicians and mathematics teaching specialists who have studied this problem have been analysed.
The work indicates that due to many reasons there shouldn’t be any talk about pupils who are competent or incompetent for mathematics and that it would be more appropriate ( and legitimate) to talk about pupils lagging behind in the maths classes and about pupils showing special interest in maths.
