Abstract

On the basis of the archival sources preserved in the parish archive of Zemunik author delivers a list of the nineteenth century renovations of the parish church of St Catherine situated on the Gradina of Zemunik. Absence of the relevant documents from the seventeenth and eighteenth century disables us to precisely determine time of the church foundation. Therefore, the above mentioned documents from the nineteenth century are quite important because they witness that in this period the church had to be renovated several times because of the various damages, which were caused by rain and catchment water since the church position at Gradina of Zemunik was quite unfavorable. Moreover, the church
was several times robbed because of its location far away from the settlement. Because of these reasons contemporary parish priests appealed for establishment of the new parish church in the middle of the village, which happened almost a century after the unfortunate
event of 19 August 1886, when lightning struck the church roof, which caused a big fire that completely consumed the entire church. This event has shocked the entire Zemunik community as well as the population in the entire Diocese of Zadar.
