Abstract

L. illyricum (Horvatic Papes, 2n = (8x) = 72 (+ 1 — 2B), (8x — 2) = = 70 (+ 1—2B), (8x — 1) = 71 (+ 1—9B), (8x + 1) = 73 (+ 8B); and 2n = (4x) = 36, is proposed as a species. It has been promoted from the variety L. croaticum var. illyricum Horvatić. Its area includes that of a taxon which was treated as L. montanum var. adustum (Koch) Briq. et Cav. in Yugoslavia.
L. illyricum is an endemic growing on high mountains of the central part of Yugoslavia at altitudes over 1500 m. The habitats of its populations are mainly untouched; they are limestone cracks in the alpine zone above the wood border (Fig. 1 and Table 1). L. illyricum could be distinguished from the two previously mentioned taxa by phytogeographic (Fig. 1), ecological (Table 1), morphological (Fig. 2, 6) and cytotaxonomic data (chromosome numbers and morphology: Fig. 3, 4, 5, 6
