Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine students’ attitudes toward classical music and music classes in the elementary and secondary school and the impact of exposure to classical music during the secondary and higher education on the students’ attitudes toward classical music and music classes in general. The results confirm the positive impact of exposure to classical music throughout higher education on the attitudes toward classical music and music classes but also on the existence of verbalism at the expense of musical experience in music classes. Furthermore, a poor theatre and classical concerts attendance was observed. The author points to the need for change of the music teaching approach so as to reduce verbalism and on the other hand to increase the frequency of quality musical experiences by means of music reproductions as well as live performances.
