Abstract
The yield trials with eleven varieties of winter barley has been conducted at the Institute for plant breeding and production, Agr. faculty in Zagreb during four years (1996-1969). The experiments were of a randomized complete block design with five replications. Each plot consisted of five rows 5 m long and 0,20 m apart. On the basis of the results obtained, the following conclusions can be drawn: The greatest yielding capacity has the variety Hauters, with 61,4 q/ha average yield of grain. The varieties Perga (59,1 q/ha) and Senta (59,0 q/ha) were, also better in average yields, than the our domestic variety J-20 (standard). The higher yielding capacity of these varieties is brought about on theirs earliness and better resistance to lodging. Amoung the examined varieties Melior 12 has produced grain of highest test weight, with 49,8 gr/1000 kernel in average, but was not significant productive than the standard variety. At the same time, Melior 12 is very susceptible to loose smut (Ustilago nuda). On the basis of these results the varieties Hauters, Perga and Senta are recommended for our conditions.
