Abstract

Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is a hardy perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family. lt is widely distributed through Mediterranean area to central Asia and it has been known and used for centuries. Most of the commercial herb is harvested from its spontaneous populations but several Origanum species are nowadays cultivated as culinary herbs, as medicinal plants and as garden plants. The paper reviews the most important biological characteristics of oregano, its chemical caracteristics as well as cultivation methods.
