Abstract

With the aim of obtaining as much reliable information about the production characteristics of the newly created sugar beet hybrids, cultivar trials were set up in order to select the best hybrids: to be sown in subsequent years. Trials included hybrids grown on extensive areas in the region providing raw material for the Sugar Refinery Virovitica or those which are offered to the producers as new creations. Economic traits of 28 sugar beet hybrids were studied in microtrials throughout 1997 , 1998 and 1999 on location Zagreb-Maksimir and in a demonstration trial on location Virovitica in 1999. Research results indicate that the production conditions (year, location) have a substantial effect upon the production of sugar beet. Significant differences between hybrids were also recorded for root yield, digestion and sugar yield. Based on this research, the following hybrids may be singled out as the highest-yielding ones with respect to sugar yield: Kawemaja, Lena, Perla, Cermo, Romea and Rubin. As regards digestion, Marika, Zita and Puma were the best hybrids.
