Abstract

The conservation of plant genetic resources, important for food and agriculture, is carried out in the Republic of Croatia under the project of the Croatian bank of plant genes. The Croatian bank of plant genes (HBBG) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was established in 1991. The establishment, organization and the scientific concept of the HBBG are the results of a hundred years' work of Croatian geneticists, plant breeders and seed growers on preserving plant genetic resources for the present and future generations. Collection, description and estimation of the properties of the received material, documentation, conservation and use of plant genetic resources are the main task of the HBBG. The HBBG is open for collaboration with all scientists and profesionals in Croatia involved in collecting, studying, preserving and using plant genetic resources. The HBBG is also open to collaboration internationally on sub-regional, regional and world levels thus contributing to the conservation of plant genetic resources in the world.
