Abstract

In education process, new and abstract concepts are grasped much more easily if they are linked to previously familiar phenomena and illustrated by real-life demonstration that is more than just a screen animation. Temperature is a property whose explanation on a micro level is completely different from how it is understood by non-experts. This is why a demonstration is designed to show to students the essence of this phenomenon and enables them to take part in it directly: they play gas molecules, adjust their motion to higher or lower temperature and at the same time link what they perceive as a consequence of this behaviour with their knowledge of macroscopic properties of cool or heated gas. In the next phase of demonstration, using the same rules of behaviour it is shown how high temperature causes degradation of complex molecules such as proteins and carbonhydrates, exactly because of the property that heated gas particles have bigger kinetic energy and thus act on organic molecules in a purely mechanical way.
