Abstract

The article concerns the semiotics of film providing the example of the video spot The Doll, a short feature film, by the music band S.A.R.S. from Belgrade. Referring to the debate sparked on the occasion of the appearence of the video, we have examined both sets of contents; namely, is it a „love song“ or a cover-up story of drug addiction. We have mostly examined the plot of The Doll from two different angles, as well as other elements such as cutting, music and others. The analysis is based on the specific number of „squares“, i.e. frames that were analyzed both individually and in relation to the preceding and succeeding frames, as well as to the overall structure of the film. We were specially concerned with the question of metaphors and symbols of specific film elements. We have mostly relied on Yuri Lotman's theory.
