Abstract

The purpose of the research of teaching and learning methods in citizenship education stems from the need to achieve learning outcomes defined from the curricular approach. The aim of this research was to examine teachers’ opinions towards application of teaching and learning methods in citizenship education. Results obtained on a sample of 225 primary school teachers suggest that they most frequently applied methods of active and collaborative teaching and learning. Teachers that teach citizenship education in a more interdisciplinary way apply frequently offered methods, and teachers that teach citizenship education in extracurricular way or as a project apply more different teaching and learning methods. The proper choice of teaching and learning methods in educational practice is extremely important for achieving learning outcomes. Competent teachers with their knowledge, skills and values are needed for that because they can encourage development of pupils’ competencies.
