Abstract
The aim of the study was to ascertain the differences between students’ physics grades considering the measure in which they used specific learning strategies: deep processing, surface processing and metacognitive control. Learning strategies are defined as any behaviour or thinking that facilitate information coding in a way that will increase their integration and finding. This study was conducted in the context of physics classes which students often find hard and boring. The study was conducted on 625 students in five grammar schools from Slavonia and Baranja area. Instrument used in this study was the adapted Learning Strategies Scale (Lončarić, 2014) which measures three types of strategies: deep processing, surface processing and metacognitive control cycle. The results have shown that the students who used more of deep processing and metacognitive control, and those who use less of surface processing acquire better grades in physics. Furthermore, the results indicate the need to educate students about using the adequate strategies, which would prevent failure in this subject, and possibly the negative attitude connected to physics.
