Abstract

This article deals with the types of changes that have occurred in tourist motivations in the last two decades, both worldwide and in Croatia, and the reasons behind these changes. Such changes in Croatian tourism are partially the result of the war in Croatia.
Special emphasis in placed on the cultural aspects of tourism development. To this effect, the article features a brief overview of modern theoretical viewpoints on the changes that have occurred in tourist motivation, on postmodernism and virtual reality as powerful agents in
tourist trips. The article speaks o f the role and significance of culture in the general social changes that have occurred in the world over the past twenty so years. These changes have caused profound changes in the general trends of both tourist motivation and tourist routes.
