Abstract

Sheep and goat production have a long tradition in Croatia, and due to their biological characteristics, sheep and goats are also ideal animals for organic farming. This is confirmed by the fact that number of sheep and goats in organic farming in our country, but also in other parts of Europe, is increasing, whereas this type of livestock production is based on the application of high animal welfare standards, with production of highly valuable products, environmental protection and biodiversity preservation. Sheep and goats are ruminants and fulfil their nutrient needs mostly by grazing on pastures. Modest and easily adaptable, these are the species that have adapted well to the inaccessible, karst areas of our country, whereby for the organic livestock farming the most appropriate are just indigenous breeds. The rules in organic livestock farming, as well as in organic sheep and goat farming are prescribed by legislation, including animal accommodation conditions and stocking density.
