Abstract
The founder of phenomenology of the alien, Bernhard Waldenfels, unambiguously pointed out that German idealism represents a gigantic attempt at allowing things to express themselves in spirit. On this ground we can claim that Husserl’s phenomenology presents itself as following the idealistic way of thinking. Relying on that connection, this article attempts to shed some light on the common thread that lead from the speculative self-realization of the spirit, through the transcendental description of things themselves, to the phenomenological interpretation of the alien. The primary focus of this investigation is the notion of withdrawal (Entzug), as only after recognizing its unacceptability from the perspective of Kant’s and Hegel’s philosophy, that is, the ambiguous status of the notion in Husserl, can we show why phenomenology of the alien only established itself in the framework of contemporary philosophy.
