Abstract

The essay offers a close reading of the four paintings that Artemisia Gentileschi dedicated to the Judith theme (Judith Slaying Holofernes, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, 1612-13; Judith and Her Maidservant, Palazzo Pitti, Florence, ca. 1618-19; Judith Slaying Holofernes, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, ca.1620; Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes, The Detroit Institute of Arts, ca. 1625-27) and highlights the compatibility of the woman painter’s reinterpretation with a feminist perspective.
