Abstract
Since 1998 Zagvozd − a village in the hinterland of Split (Dalmatia, Croatia) – has been the location of a meeting called »Actors in Zagvozd«. Many critiques and reviews were written and published on this important cultural event that had started with no finantial funds and equipment gathering actors and presenting plays from all over Croatia every summer. This manifestation produced a troupe called »Actors in Zagvozd« that have been performing plays in various theatre houses in Croatia, Austria, Monte Negro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The founder of the manifestation was Vedran Mlikota, a well known Croatian actor; he started this event with the support of Darko Ćurdo, Žarko Potočnjak, Zlatko Vitez and Blaženko Dedić. The influence of this annual meeting has made it outgrow the local event and experiment of popularising acting/actors/theatre in Zagvozd itself; the manifestation matured and evolved into an important public show and even a festival that has had impact on the cultural climate of South Dalmatia (including Makarska, Imotski and Split) and Croatian theatre life in general.
In this paper the authors have discussed this unusual cultural phenomenon, investigated its impulses among the local population and the reaction of the theatre critics and audience in the whole Croatia.
This has been the first time that »Actors in Zagvozd« meeting is being discussed in academic writing. Moreover, the paper offers the first chronological evidence of all the performances given at »Actors in Zagvozd« in the period between 1998 and 2015.
