Abstract

Initial education prepares teachers to teach Music Culture in the lower grades of elementary school in the following areas: singing, playing, listening and musical creativity. The paper discusses the process of acquiring musical competences to perform music activities in elementary schools with regard to the learning outcomes of music lessons during a five-year teacher study. In the empirical part of the paper, we have analysed the self-assessment of teachers in lower primary school classes (N = 160) concerning the music fields and elements they use and consider important for teaching Music Culture. The students of the Teacher’s Study of the University of Juraj Dobrila in Pula (N = 95)were asked the same questions to determine their opinion on the importance of acquiring specific musical competences for their future teaching of Music Culture. The authors propose Kolb’s model of experiential learning as one of the possible solutions for acquiring musical competencies in the initial education of future teachers.
