Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the theoretical considerations, and previous research of the (distributed) school leadership. It emphasizes the school leadership key dimensions with a focus on the critical decision-making process. Furthermore, the paper indicates that the appropriate means of stakeholders’ participation in the decision-making process has not been developed at a satisfactory level. In this context, the critical decision-making concept is proposed, due to the fact that it has been deemed one of the key dimensions of effectively distributed school leadership in prior discussions. The concept is elaborated on the basis of two phenomena – critical thinking, and decision-making process. Firstly, the concept of critical decision-making, that is, critical leadership, which is based on the few studies in this area, is presented. The final part of the paper illustrates the challenges and open questions that should be taken into account in further research on (critical) school leadership. Moreover, a list of determinants for critical decision-making process in the school context has been created, which can be used as well as revised in further empirical research.
