Abstract

The paper discusses the Cominform-motivated events which directly contributed to the final canonization of socialist realism and prompted the pressure of the Communist Party’s repressive apparatus towards visual arts. In the following year or two after the Cominform Resolution in 1948 artists were faced with an unprecedented degree of pressure, aimed at different segments of their life and work. The paper analyses methods of ideological pressure implemented mainly through the ideological and political sector of the Croatian Association of Artists (Udruženje likovnih umjetnika Hrvatske) and gives insight into the institutional infrastructure created with the aim of encouraging the creation of artwork conformant to the doctrine of socialist realism.
