Abstract

Ulysses, James Joyce’s monumental novel and one of the most significant literary accomplishments of the 20th century, is a work of broad associative meanings. It is quite complex in terms of its thematic concepts and even more so in terms of their artistic treatment. In this essay we aim to identify the representative modes of popular culture within the novel’s polyphonic context. We will also attempt to decrypt the narrative code whose unique dialectic affirms popular culture as a lifestyle. This kind of analysis is to be carried out by investigating a dialogical relationship between the novel and popular culture for the purpose of accentuating its constructive, dynamic character.
