Abstract

The exhibition Painter’s Memento organized this spring in Modern gallery in Zagreb by prof. Nenad Fabijanić, Šebalj’s friend over many years and collaborator on many realized projects so far, reminds us once again of Ivo Šebalj’s exceptional talent and his influence on Croatian art. Carefully selected motifs of great oil paintings were displayed in Vraniczany’s palace overlooking Zrinjevac. Šebalj’s diptych My memento of a barbaric act in Knin church, painted in 1997, was for the first time presented to the public in the central room. The monumental painting is a kind of a requiem, a moment of emptiness and abstract soliloquy. The set design, subtle and unobtrusive yet indispensable, combines a valuable artefact - a carbonized statue of Christ demolished in the 1993 arson that destroyed the monastery Church of St. Anthony in Knin - with Šebalj's impression of this barbaric act. The spatial installation is an axis and an accent, confirmation of a supra-temporal dialogue between two creators.
