Abstract

On the territory of the Republic of Croatia the development of roads lasts more than 2000 years. The first roads were reported due to the establishment of contacts and among populated areas, trade and for military needs. The old roads had a stone base, a curb, a millet, a drainage, and they were designed to go for the most favorable terrain lanes. After the breakup of the Roman Empire, the significant construction of roads occurs during the Middle Ages, and the most significant period of rebuilding is the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The remnants of road construction in the Republic of Croatia throughout history are evident today, also modern road follow partially the route of old roads.
