Abstract

In this paper the decline of genitive of direct objects in Croatian Church Slavonic and
Old Croatian is discussed. Owing to formal and semantic reasons (negation, supin, partitivity, low activity) direct object in Slavic is sometimes expressed by genitive. On the other hand, this case alternates with accusative in the same environments. The factors that give rise to accusative instead of genitive in direct objects fall into two major groups: nominal and verbal. Stylistic factors play an important role too. The
author compares Croatian Church Slavonic with Old Croatian.
