Abstract

The argument deals with the connection between Hungarian writer István Örkény and Russian writer Daniil Kharms, whose respective creative visions evince a similarly absurd imagining of the world. Through the short humoristic form in their collection of stories One minute stories and Cases, each author aims at overcoming the absurdity of existence – their shared experience due to the personal tragic fate and the scrutiny of the government and society which had befallen them. The notions of personality, a possibility of identification, the reach of the human mind and logic, the questions of war, aggression, the breakdown of history and time, diversity, the passing of time, death and overcoming the fear of it, these are the questions that are of interest to both Örkény and Kharms. Their means of fighting absurdity is the written word, that both of them use to fill the void. Special attention is dedicated to the problems of language, misunderstanding and miscommunication among people, all of which play key role in understanding both authors.
