Abstract

Iliotibial band is structure made of muscle-tendon tissue and it is located on the lateral side of the leg with its starting point on pelvis and insertion on tibia. The most common cause of iliotibial band friction syndrome is scraping of iliotibial band on lateral epicondyle of the femur, that mostly happens while preforming flexion and extension of knee joint. Factors that cause ilitiobial band friction
syndrome can be divided on intrinsic and extrinsic, but the most common ones are disorders in biomechanical relations (varus deformation) and poor performance of daily activities. Clinical reading of this diagnose is characterized by sharp pain on the lateral side of the knee, two centimeters above joint line of the knee joint and it mostly appears while preforming 30-40 degree of knee flexion. Basic
diagnostic method is clinical diagnostic and it includes anamensis, range of motion measurements, palpation, percusion and specific diagnostic tests. Specific diagnostic tests used for iliotibial band friction syndrome are Renne’s test, Ober’s test and Nobel’s test. Treatment and rehabilitation of this diagnosis can be considered as non-operative (conservative) and operative. Non-operative methods of
treatment and rehabilitation are used in most cases of iliotibial band friction syndrome while operative methods are applied only in exceptional cases. The main purpose of this paper can be described as presentation of characteristics of patients diagnosed with iliotibial band friction syndrome and presentation of recommended methods of treatment and rehabilitation for that diagnosis.
