Abstract

This article analyses the narrativization of the space of the city of Madrid in La forja (The Forge), the first part of the trilogy The Forging of a Rebel, by Arturo Barea (Badajoz, 1897 - Faringdon, 1957), a prominent representative of literature of the Spanish republican exile. Special attention is given to the correlation of the perception of space and understanding of the social conditions in early twentieth-century Spain, the affective and ideological aspect of the description of space, as well as places of growing up and self-awareness evoked by Arturo Barea from a temporal and geographical distance.
