Abstract

Pedro Almodóvar is a well-known name in European and world cinema, a director who questions various individual and social problems in a unique way. His films are mostly based on the original scripts, but sometimes other literary works contribute to the narrative structure. This paper thus analyzes the use of literature and its function in creating Almodóvar's film language. The main topic considers the symbolic and semantic functions of the monodrama The Human Voice by the French writer Jean Cocteau, offering just one possible interpretation of its appearance in Almodóvar's filmography, while the adaptation of the play is significant in revealing the new meanings from the point of view of both a contemporary artist and also of an individual.
