Abstract

The article analyses the first translation and the retranslation of Pirandello’s novel Her Husband by Dubravko Dujšin and Karmen Milačić with the aim of defining their translation style. Translation analysis is accompanied by statistical data obtained from a parallel corpus consisting of Pirandello’s original and the two translations. The following stylistic markers were examined: the number of sentences and the average sentence length, type/token ratio, use of the aorist tense in narration and verbs tenses in free indirect speech, idioms, and dialecticisms. Along with the corpus-based approach, translation archaeology was also applied to describe in details the original’s and the translations’ contextual voices. The results challenge the Retranslation Hypothesis, while the two translators’ style is considerably determined by their vocation and experience in translation.
