Abstract
From the moment they are introduced to the media at an early age, children encounter a variety of media content that changes the way they spend their free time (Segu, 2009, p. 62), and one of the favourites is socializing and playing in the virtual world – the world of video games, in which they are exposed to their positive and negative impact. The newly created circumstances reflect on education and change the role of parents, educators, and teachers. Therefore, today, more than ever, the need to develop media competence and media literacy among children and adults with the aim of encouraging critical thinking about media content and responsible and effective use of media is highlighted. The paper presents the results of research conducted between January and March 2016 among 630 children aged 10 to 15 in three primary schools in the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County. The survey method was used to collect the results. The results of this research provide insight into the attitude of children towards video games, their preferences when choosing video games and the perception of their content and function can also serve as useful data for understanding the specific characteristics of video games and as an incentive to think about the active inclusion and use of educational video games in the learning process.
