Abstract

In the contemporary Croatian a dozen verbal idioms related to verbal assault are in activeuse. The paper deals with the idioms baciti / bacati (sasuti i sl.) drvlje i kamenje , bacati se (nabacivati se i sl.) drvljem i kamenjem na koga, na što, zasuti drvljemi kamenjem koga, što with the meaning ‘verbally assault somebody, something’. Theirorigin refers to the offenders sentenced to death by stoning. Full phrasal equivalents arefound in Serbian and Macedonian, while several semantic phrasal equivalents are usedin other Slavic languages.
