Abstract
Light and noise pollution are a growing global problem, with consequences varying from the destruction of biodiversity and disturbances in the ecological system, security problems, to the impact on human health. This paper analyses noise pollution and light pollution in the area of the city of Split. In this area, there are no systematic measurements of the noise level in all parts of the city, while there are no measurements of light pollution at all. Results of the analysis of the data from the strategic noise maps, on the exposure of the population of the city of Split to noise pollution, show that 42 % of the population is exposed to excessive levels of road traffic noise during the day, evening, and night. The analysis of publicly available satellite measurements showed that, according to light pollution classification, the sky above the city of Split falls within the city sky class, with a tendency toward the highest light pollution class. These results point to the urgent need for implementation of measures that enable the reduction of noise pollution and light pollution, with the aim of improving the quality of life in the area of the city of Split.
