Abstract

From its very inception, the use of the historical-critical approach in the study ofthe Bible faced strong opposition from Christian communities but was able, through a long process of conquest, to become the reigning king in biblical interpretation. Today, only a few Christian communities remain opposed to it. Adventist opposition, like that of other denominations, is determined by its understanding of the nature and the authority of the Scriptures. Adventist doctrines and life style were formulated as a result of the study of the Bible, considered by the church to be a revelation of God's grace and will for the human race. The church always has had a high view of the Bible, based on a number of fundamental convictions related to its nature and purpose. Such convictions had a direct impact on the way the church came to interpret the Scriptures.
