Abstract

Improvements in instruction at university level are dependent
on mutually related factors: students, faculty and institution.
The paper presents results of a research conducted with the aim of determining forms and levels of active student participation in their classes at university. The subjects (N=72) were students of pedagogy and students of teacher training from Osijek university. Empirical results of the investigation show different forms and levels of active student participation at the pedagogy and the teaching training course of study. The students require more active
involvement in the teaching/learning processes with an emphasis on research and flexibility of approach. Further, they notice the importance of criticism and self-criticism as well as adaptability to new situations and diversity. Therefore, a proposal was made for additional pedagogical education and training of university professors, because modern society calls for university professors
with different teaching competences.
