Abstract

This paper analyses key questions related to the teaching of the Croatian language and culture abroad. The fundamental reasons why, even in the 21st century, children and young people growing up outside Croatia should study the Croatian language, acquire basic facts pertaining to Croatian art, history and geography, acquaint themselves with Croatian heritage, as well as everyday life in Croatia, and thus develop their Croatian identity, are considered in this analysis. The main ways/forms of organizing Croatian teaching are presented in the paper: institutionally – within the educational system of the Republic of Croatia, i.e. domicile states; and non-institutional – within Catholic missions/communities/parishes or various associations. Students are the focus of all organizational forms, and the most active role in the teaching process is played by teachers. The paper also discusses the basic tasks that are set before the teachers, namely the design and implementation of Croatian classes and extracurricular activities, as well as the promotion of the Croatian language and culture. The times we live in are determined by extremely fast and intensive communication. Therefore, there is an emphasis on the importance of continuous communication and cooperation between all factors, from the organizers of classes and teachers to the students and their parents. In the conclusion, possible guidelines are offered for the development and further improvement of Croatian teaching, which should contribute to the realisation of its main goals, namely, a better knowledge of Croatian language, and the development of Croatian identity, as well as strengthening connection with Croatia.
