Abstract

In the paper we have dealt with the typology of female characters in And Quiet Flows the Don, focusing our interest on Sholokhov's three heroines, namely, Natalia Korshunova, Daria Melekhova and Aksinya Astakhova, highlighting the similarity in character construction – the motif of beauty and the tragic fate of all three heroines. The analysis has been carried out from a gender theory perspective, while striving to examine the matrix on which the characters are modeled, which also reveals their position in the patriarchal model of the world. Therefore, a particular focus has been put on examining the socio-historical conditioning of character modeling, that is, on examining the semantic connections established within the family and social codes by which the characters are structured. Relying on the achievements of the structuralist and semiotic schools of thought, as well as on the gender studies research dealing with women's roles in the social and cultural space, we analyze the meaning and position of the characters from the viewpoint of their participation in certain actions, on the basis of which we have singled out three types of female characters related to three functions in the patriarchal cultural code, namely: the function of a woman-mother (Natalia), the function of a woman-sinner (Daria) and the function of a woman-rebel (Aksinya).
