Abstract

Since ancient times, winemaking in Herzegovina has been a significant economic factor for the population of this region. The autochthonous cultivar Blatina is the bearer of the quality of red wines, and at the same time it is the most common among the red varieties grown in Herzegovina. In addition to Blatina, the accompanying varieties Trnjak, Vranac, Alicante Bouschet, Plavka and Merlot are grown in the vineyards. The Blatina cultivar has a functionally female flower, which is why there may be a reduced yield in years unfavorable for fertilization. In combination with the accompanying varieties, it produces a high-quality red wine, which was protected by law in 1973 and declared famous under the name Blatina Mostar.
