Abstract

The creation of new varieties, conservation and seed production in the European Union have a long tradition and are extremely important for each Member State due to the sacurity of mercantile production and ultimately food independence. In all Member States, seed production takes place on relatively small areas, in relation to the total arable area. In the period from 2020 to 2023, seed production in the European Union takes place on an average of 2 009 076 ha (1.27%), out of a total of 157 400 000 ha, while seed production in Croatia averages 20.499 ha (1.36%) which is slightly more than the European Union average. According to the total seed production, Croatia ranks eighteenth in the European Union. However, in terms of plant species for which there is a domestic breeding programme, we are in the upper range of EU Member States.
