Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the state of safety at railway-road crossings (LCs) of small European railway systems. Small railway systems in this paper mean the railways of European countries with a railway network length less than the median value (3,907 km) of the EU-25 railways, plus the railways of Switzerland and Norway. The set three hypotheses are proven by the methods of descriptive statistics and the method of correlation analysis. The main finding of this paper confirms a statistically significant relationship between the number of LCs and the number of accidents. The obtained findings point to the necessity of reducing and/or completely eliminating LCs in order to ensure the desired level of railway traffic safety.
